Pakistan Avalanche Wipes Out a Generation of Nepali Climbing Greats The recent avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak has left the international mountaineering community reeling.
The disaster claimed six lives, including some of Nepal's most accomplished high altitude climbers, wiping out a generation of technical expertise and leadership.
Among those killed were Nirmal Purja, who held multiple world records for climbing the highest peaks in the shortest time; Kili Pemba Sherpa, a renowned guide who had summited all 14 of the world's 8,000m peaks; and Gyaljen Sherpa, a veteran climber with dozens of successful ascents to his name.
