Reinaldo Diaz, founder of Lake Worth Waterkeeper, notes that the watershed surrounding the proposed site is complex and vulnerable to disruptions. “Our watershed is really complex,” he says. “Ours is more like a spiderweb, which is why the impacts would be far-reaching.”

The debate over Project Tango highlights broader concerns about datacenters’ environmental footprint. With growing demand for cloud computing and online services, these facilities are sprouting up globally – but often with little attention paid to their impact on local ecosystems.

Critics argue that the proposed datacenter’s location near a sensitive wetland area and an elementary school makes it particularly egregious. County commissioners recently voted to deny an expansion of the project, though two other applications remain pending. Sue Ellen Loyzelle, a founding member of the Western Palm Beach Community Alliance, warns: “We don’t want our bills to go up, but it’s more than that… What is all of this going to do?”

The answer is clear – and it’s not just about property values or electricity costs. The Everglades is a national treasure, a unique ecosystem that deserves protection. As we continue to grapple with the consequences of climate change, we must be mindful of the cumulative impact of human activities on sensitive ecosystems like this one.
