This response deflects legitimate criticism and reveals a disturbing trend in Infantino’s leadership style – one that prioritizes image over substance.

He boasts about the tournament’s safety and security, downplays high-profile controversies, and takes credit for successfully hosting a country at war with one of its co-hosts (Iran). However, this sanitized version of events ignores real issues that plagued the tournament.

The treatment of Iran’s national team is particularly egregious. Fans faced visa delays, backroom staff were denied entry, and supporters had their ticket allocation revoked. These logistical issues affected fans from other countries as well, including Haiti, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, who suffered due to travel bans imposed by the Trump administration. Infantino focuses on the millions of people who received visas, rather than acknowledging problems faced by those who didn’t.

Infantino’s response to criticism is telling. Rather than engaging with legitimate concerns about officiating standards or addressing controversy surrounding immigration and Customs Enforcement officials at World Cup stadiums, he resorts to platitudes about love, tolerance, and celebration. His assertion that the beautiful game can bring people together as humans is undermined by his own administration’s handling of issues like refereeing standards and player conduct.

Infantino’s confidence in his leadership and chances of re-election next year may be misplaced. His outburst has sparked criticism from various quarters, with La Liga boss accusing him of “running out of time” at FIFA. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also declined to investigate Infantino for possible breaches of political neutrality.

Infantino’s siege mentality and defensive posturing have created an atmosphere where criticism is seen as a personal attack rather than a legitimate critique of policy. This approach undermines the very fabric of accountability and transparency essential in governing bodies like FIFA.
